Wurmple Evolution
Wurmple evolves into either
Silcoon or
Cascoon starting at Level 7. The result depends entirely on its hidden Personality Value, an invisible number assigned when the Pokémon is generated. You cannot predict, see, or alter this value. To get a specific evolution, you must catch multiple
Wurmple and level them up.
The Essentials: Understanding the Personality Value
Evolving Wurmple requires reaching Level 7, making it one of the earliest evolutions in the franchise. However, the branching path into either
Silcoon (which becomes
Beautifly) or
Cascoon (which becomes
Dustox) is entirely out of the player's control. The game uses a hidden mechanic called the Personality Value (PV).
The Personality Value is a 32-bit integer assigned to every Pokémon the moment it is encountered or hatched. For
Wurmple, the game divides the upper 16 bits of this value by 10. If the remainder is between 0 and 4, it evolves into
Silcoon. If the remainder is between 5 and 9, it evolves into
Cascoon. Because the PV is strictly hidden from the player interface, the evolution outcome is essentially a 50/50 coin flip from your perspective.
- Target:
Silcoon or
Cascoon - Requirement: Reach Level 7
- Trigger: Hidden Personality Value (Random)
In terms of in-game viability, neither evolution path holds up in serious competitive play.
Beautifly functions as a frail early-game special attacker with access to Quiver Dance, while
Dustox serves as an early-game pivot with access to Moonlight and Toxic. Both suffer from abysmal base stats and are severely outclassed by mid-game. Use them to clear early story hurdles, then box them for stronger options.
Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
In modern titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the traditional automatic evolution screen is replaced by a manual trigger. Reaching Level 7 will not force
Wurmple to evolve immediately. Instead, the Poké Ball icon next to its name in your party menu will begin to flash.
Because you cannot predict the evolution, the most efficient method is batch-processing. Catch five or six
Wurmple in the wild and place them all in your active party.
- Engage in wild battles or use EXP Candies XS until the entire party reaches Level 7.
- Open your satchel and navigate to the party menu.
- Select a
Wurmple with a flashing Poké Ball icon and press X to trigger the evolution. - Repeat this process for each
Wurmple until you acquire the specific
Silcoon or
Cascoon you need. - Release the duplicates back into the wild.
This brute-force method saves significant time compared to catching and leveling a single
Wurmple, hoping for the correct 50/50 outcome, and having to return to the wild if it fails.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Limitations
Do not waste time searching for
Wurmple in the Paldea region.
Wurmple,
Silcoon,
Cascoon,
Beautifly, and
Dustox are not coded into the base game of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They are also entirely absent from both the Teal Mask and Indigo Disk DLC expansions.
Furthermore, attempting to transfer a
Wurmple from Pokémon HOME into Scarlet or Violet will result in a restriction error. The Pokémon must remain in HOME or be moved to a compatible game like Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, or Legends:
Arceus.
Pokémon GO Mechanics and Candy Farming
In Pokémon GO, the evolution process ditches the Level 7 requirement in favor of Candy. Evolving
Wurmple into either
Silcoon or
Cascoon costs exactly 12
Wurmple Candy. Just like the mainline games, the result is completely random.
There is no naming trick for
Wurmple in Pokémon GO. Unlike
Eevee, where specific nicknames guarantee a
Vaporeon,
Jolteon, or
Flareon for the first use,
Wurmple's evolution relies purely on RNG. You must simply spend the 12 Candy and hope for the best.
Because the evolution cost is so low,
Wurmple is an excellent candidate for mass-evolution sessions. Players looking to power-level their trainer accounts can hoard
Wurmple and Candy, activate a Lucky Egg to double experience gains, and evolve dozens of them in a single sitting to farm massive amounts of XP.
Troubleshooting: Debunking Wurmple Evolution Myths
The hidden nature of the Personality Value has spawned dozens of persistent myths regarding
Wurmple's evolution. If you are struggling to get a specific evolution, ensure you are not falling victim to these common misconceptions.
- The Day/Night Myth: Many players believe evolving
Wurmple during the day yields
Silcoon, and at night yields
Cascoon. This is 100% false. Time of day has zero influence on the outcome. - The Gender Myth: Male and female
Wurmple have the exact same 50/50 chance to evolve into either cocoon. Gender does not dictate the path. - The Nature and Stats Myth: A
Wurmple with a Modest nature is not more likely to become a
Beautifly, nor is an Impish nature tied to
Dustox. Individual Values (IVs) and Natures are calculated independently from the Personality Value's modulo operation.
If you keep getting the same evolution repeatedly, you are simply experiencing a streak of bad luck with the RNG. The only guaranteed fix is to catch fresh
Wurmple. Breeding a
Silcoon holding an Everstone will not guarantee the resulting
Wurmple will also evolve into
Silcoon; the newly hatched
Wurmple generates a brand new, randomized Personality Value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell what Wurmple will evolve into before Level 7?
No. The evolution depends on a hidden Personality Value generated when you first encounter the Pokémon. There is no way to view this value in-game, making the outcome impossible to predict without external hacking tools.
Does the time of day affect Wurmple's evolution?
No. Time of day has absolutely no effect on whether Wurmple becomes Silcoon or Cascoon. The evolution is determined strictly by its hidden Personality Value, regardless of when it levels up.
Is there a naming trick to evolve Wurmple in Pokémon GO?
No. Unlike Eevee, there are no specific nicknames you can give Wurmple to guarantee a Silcoon or Cascoon in Pokémon GO. The evolution costs 12 Candy and is completely random every time.
Why won't my Wurmple transfer into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Wurmple and its entire evolutionary line are not coded into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including the DLC expansions. You cannot transfer them via Pokémon HOME into Generation 9 games.
