Is Cloyster Good?

Yes, Cloyster is a lethal but highly polarized setup sweeper in RU singles and a fantastic carry for story playthroughs. Its viability relies entirely on the Shell Smash and Skill Link combo. While special attackers easily exploit its frail special defense, a successful setup often guarantees a late-game sweep.

If it sets up Shell Smash, it wins; if it takes a special attack, it faints.

Cloyster currently sits in the RU tier for Scarlet and Violet singles, maintaining a niche 1.5% usage rate. Its role is strictly defined as a physical setup sweeper. You bring it in, find an opening to use Shell Smash, and attempt to sweep the opponent's remaining team.

Its stat distribution dictates this playstyle entirely. The massive physical defense allows Cloyster to survive physical hits comfortably, providing the necessary window to set up. Conversely, its special defense is virtually non-existent, meaning any strong special attack will instantly remove it from the field.

While Overcoat and Shell Armor exist as alternative abilities, they are completely unviable for an offensive set. Skill Link is the sole reason Cloyster functions offensively, turning low-base-power multi-hit moves into devastating, consistent attacks.

Running Cloyster means committing to the Shell Smash setup. This move doubles its Attack, Special Attack, and Speed, at the cost of lowering both defenses. Once set up, Cloyster outspeeds the vast majority of the unboosted metagame.

The offensive core relies entirely on Skill Link.

• Icicle Spear: Becomes a guaranteed 125-base-power STAB move that breaks through Focus Sash and Substitute.
• Rock Blast: Provides essential coverage against Fire and Bug-types, also benefiting from the guaranteed five hits.
• Ice Shard: A crucial priority move to pick off faster threats or priority users that might try to revenge-kill Cloyster after its defenses drop.
• Drill Run: Offers necessary Ground-type coverage to hit Electric and Steel-types that otherwise resist its main attacks.

For items, you must choose between survivability and momentum. A Focus Sash guarantees you survive any single hit from full health, ensuring a Shell Smash goes off. Alternatively, a White Herb instantly restores the defense drops caused by Shell Smash, keeping Cloyster reasonably bulky against physical priority moves.

While the physical Skill Link set is dominant, Cloyster has access to a few alternative tools. Heavy-Duty Boots can be run to ignore entry hazards, ensuring its Focus Sash remains intact if you are playing without reliable hazard removal.

The Mixed or Special Approach

Though rare, Cloyster can utilize Liquidation or Hydro Pump. Liquidation provides a reliable physical Water STAB if you prefer not to rely solely on Ice and Rock coverage. Hydro Pump takes advantage of the Special Attack boost from Shell Smash, allowing Cloyster to hit physical walls that might try to stall it out.

Substitute is another tech option. Leftovers combined with Substitute can punish opponents who attempt to switch or use status moves, giving Cloyster a free shield behind which it can safely click Shell Smash.

Cloyster thrives when the opposing team is weakened and entry hazards are on the field. It pairs exceptionally well with dedicated hazard setters. Torterra and Azelf are premium teammates in the RU tier, laying down Stealth Rock and Spikes to chip away at the opponent's team.

Once hazards are up, Cloyster's multi-hit moves become impossible to switch into safely. Entei serves as an excellent offensive partner, applying immense pressure to the Steel and bulky Water-types that Cloyster struggles against.

Mimikyu is another fantastic teammate. It can act as a secondary sweeper or utilize its disguise to safely revenge-kill threats that manage to take down Cloyster. Lapras can also provide defensive synergy, absorbing Water-type attacks aimed at Cloyster while offering its own offensive pressure.

Cloyster's biggest flaw is its predictability. Every opponent knows exactly what it wants to do. If you fail to secure a safe turn for Shell Smash, Cloyster is essentially dead weight.

Special attackers are its absolute bane. Electric, Grass, and strong Special Water-type attackers will easily OHKO Cloyster due to its abysmal special bulk. Even resisted special hits deal massive damage.

Priority moves also present a massive hurdle. After a Shell Smash, Cloyster's physical defense drops significantly (unless holding a White Herb). Fighting-type priority or strong neutral priority from opposing sweepers can easily pick it off before it gets a chance to attack.

Do not bring Cloyster into a matchup heavily populated by bulky Water-types or Unaware users. Bulky Water-types resist Icicle Spear and take minimal damage from Rock Blast, allowing them to easily stall out Cloyster or hit back with special attacks.

Avoid picking Cloyster if your team lacks entry hazard support or a way to deal with fast special attackers. It requires a team built around enabling its sweep.

If you need a reliable defensive pivot or a bulky Water-type that does not require a setup turn to exert pressure, look toward pure defensive Water-types instead. Cloyster is an all-or-nothing offensive tool, not a defensive staple.
