Is Magmar Good?

Magmar (In-Game & Playthrough)

Magmar is strictly a situational mid-game Pokémon for story playthroughs and is completely unviable in serious competitive PvP. While its base 100 Special Attack and 93 Speed easily clear standard NPC battles, its abysmal physical Defense requires an Eviolite to survive late-game encounters. If you cannot trade to get Magmortar, it remains a decent stopgap.

Verdict

Magmar is an acceptable Fire-type for your story team if you give it an Eviolite, but it falls off hard against fully evolved late-game threats.

Rating 5.5/10 · Tier B-(Story Playthrough) · Role : Special Attacker / Eviolite Pivot

Strengths

  • Base 100 Special Attack hits hard during the mid-game.
  • Flame Body ability provides excellent utility by burning physical attackers.
  • Base 93 Speed outpaces the majority of unoptimized NPC teams.
  • Compatible with Eviolite to patch up its defensive flaws.

Weaknesses

  • Base 57 Defense makes it extremely fragile against physical hits.
  • Requires trading with a Magmarizer to reach its actual potential.
  • Completely unviable in Smogon or VGC competitive formats.
  • Severely outclassed by easily accessible Fire-types like Arcanine.

Tier & Role: A Mid-Game Playthrough Specialist

Magmar occupies a very specific niche: the mid-game carry. In standard playthroughs like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's DLC, or the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Magmar sits firmly in the B-tier for story progression. It functions primarily as a fast special attacker that can clear out early-to-mid game gyms and boss battles before the difficulty scales up.

Its stat distribution heavily favors offense. With a base 100 Special Attack and base 93 Speed, Magmar naturally outspeeds and OHKOs most unoptimized NPC Pokémon. You will rarely need setup moves; clicking Flamethrower is usually enough to progress.

However, Magmar is completely absent from Smogon SV competitive statistics and VGC usage data. Because it is a middle-stage evolution with glaring defensive holes, it has zero viability in serious PvP. You are using Magmar strictly to beat the story, or simply because you lack a trading partner to evolve it into Magmortar.

The Eviolite Dependency

To understand Magmar's late-game viability, you must look at its physical bulk. A base 57 Defense is a massive liability. Any STAB Earthquake or Rock Slide from a fully evolved late-game opponent will instantly knock it out. This is where the Eviolite mechanic becomes mandatory.

Equipping an Eviolite boosts Magmar's Defense and Special Defense by 50%. This item single-handedly transforms Magmar from a glass cannon into a passable pivot. Its Special Defense jumps to a very respectable level, allowing it to comfortably tank neutral special hits.

If you are playing a format or a game where Eviolite is unavailable (as was the case in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a precedent that may carry over to Legends: Z-A), Magmar's defensive utility evaporates. Without this specific held item, keeping Magmar unevolved is a strict downgrade.

Best In-Game Uses & Matchups

Magmar shines brightest when leveraging its Flame Body ability. Any contact move used against Magmar has a 30% chance to burn the attacker. This burn halves the opponent's physical damage, effectively patching up Magmar's weakest stat mid-battle.

In a playthrough context, Magmar excels in specific scenarios:

  • Grass and Bug Gyms: It outspeeds and sweeps these types effortlessly.
  • Fairy and Steel Matchups: Resisting Fairy and Steel moves allows Magmar to switch in safely against common mid-game threats.
  • Physical Attack Baiting: Switching Magmar into resisted physical contact moves (like U-turn or Play Rough) maximizes the chance to trigger a Flame Body burn.

Outside of combat, Flame Body halves the number of steps required to hatch eggs, making Magmar a permanent fixture in any breeder's party.

Optimal Story Moveset

Because Magmar is not used in competitive formats, its moveset should focus entirely on consistency and PP management for long routes and Elite Four gauntlets.

  • Flamethrower: The absolute core of the set. 100% accuracy and high PP make it infinitely better than Fire Blast for story progression.
  • Will-O-Wisp: Essential for crippling physical attackers that threaten Magmar with Rock or Ground moves.
  • Clear Smog: A fantastic utility move that strips stat boosts from annoying boss Pokémon or Totem-style encounters.
  • Focus Blast / Psychic: Used purely for coverage against Rock or Fighting types, though Focus Blast's low accuracy makes it risky for Nuzlockes.

Do not bother with physical moves like Fire Punch or Flare Blitz. Magmar's base 95 Attack is usable, but splitting EVs and natures in a playthrough is inefficient compared to maximizing its Special Attack.

Honest Weaknesses & Hard Counters

Magmar's typing and stat distribution leave it highly vulnerable to the most common offensive types in the game. Ground, Rock, and Water moves are ubiquitous on late-game NPC teams. Even with an Eviolite, a strong Earthquake from a Garchomp or Hippowdon will bypass Magmar's defenses.

Its reliance on Eviolite also means it cannot hold Heavy-Duty Boots. If you are playing any post-game battle facility where the AI uses entry hazards, Magmar will lose 25% of its health every time it switches into Stealth Rock.

Finally, Magmar suffers from 'middle-stage syndrome'. Its base stats total 495, which is high for an unevolved Pokémon, but it lacks the raw damage output of fully evolved wallbreakers. By the time you reach the Elite Four, Magmar will struggle to secure OHKOs against bulky targets, leaving it open to devastating counterattacks.

Avoid Magmar If... & Best Alternatives

You should immediately drop Magmar if you are building a team for Ranked PvP singles or doubles. It simply does not have the stats, abilities, or movepool to compete with the current meta.

In a standard playthrough, avoid Magmar if you already have access to superior Fire-types. Do not use Magmar if:

  • You have Arcanine. Arcanine offers Intimidate, Extreme Speed, and vastly superior physical bulk, making it a much safer playthrough carry.
  • You chose Skeledirge as your starter in Scarlet/Violet. Skeledirge's Unaware ability and signature move Torch Song completely outclass anything Magmar can do.
  • You need a fast sweeper. Base 93 Speed is good mid-game, but late-game you will want something like Talonflame for priority Flying moves or raw speed.

If you genuinely want to use this evolutionary line long-term, find a trading partner and evolve it into Magmortar to gain access to Thunderbolt and a massive base 125 Special Attack.

Frequently Asked Questions About Magmar

Is Magmar better than Charizard?

No. Charizard has better speed, a secondary Flying typing, an immunity to Ground, and higher overall stats. While Magmar can be slightly bulkier if holding an Eviolite, Charizard's offensive presence and movepool are vastly superior for both playthroughs and post-game.

Should I evolve Magmar into Magmortar?

Yes, unless you specifically need an Eviolite tank. Evolving into Magmortar gives a massive boost to Special Attack (up to 125) and unlocks better coverage moves like Thunderbolt. Magmar is only kept unevolved if you cannot trade or desperately need Eviolite bulk.

What is the best held item for Magmar?

Eviolite is absolutely mandatory. Because Magmar can still evolve, Eviolite boosts its Defense and Special Defense by 50%. This is the only way to patch its terrible base 57 physical Defense and prevent it from being one-shot by physical attacks.

Is Magmar viable in competitive PvP?

Absolutely not. In standard Scarlet/Violet ranked singles or doubles, Magmar lacks the stats to compete with fully evolved meta threats. It does not appear in any serious competitive usage data. Keep it restricted to your story playthrough.
