The Level 36 Threshold
Dewott evolves into
Samurott upon reaching level 36. This is a strict level-up evolution requiring no items, trading, or specific friendship values. Players can trigger this using battle experience, EXP Candies, or a Rare Candy.
If you cancel the evolution by pressing 'B',
Dewott will attempt to evolve again at level 37 and beyond. Holding an Everstone will completely block the evolution prompt. You must remove the Everstone before the level-up sequence to proceed.
In older Generation 5 games, reaching level 36 requires grinding
Audino on Route 9. Modern Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players can bypass this grind by using a handful of EXP Candies L obtained from Tera Raids.
Regional Lock: Unova vs. Hisui
The region where
Dewott levels up determines its final form. Evolving
Dewott in Pokémon Black, White, or Scarlet and Violet results in the standard Unovan
Samurott. This form retains the pure Water typing and the Torrent ability.
To obtain Hisuian
Samurott, you must transfer
Dewott into Pokémon Legends:
Arceus using Pokémon HOME. Leveling
Dewott to 36 within the Hisui region changes its evolutionary data, yielding the Water/Dark-type Hisuian
Samurott.
You cannot trigger the Hisuian evolution natively in Paldea or Kitakami. Even if the
Dewott originally hatched from a Hisuian parent, it will always evolve into Unovan
Samurott outside of the Hisui region.
Competitive Verdict: Unovan Samurott (Rating: 4/10)
As an unofficial fan-site, Pokedex.me evaluates Pokémon based on current competitive realities, and Unovan
Samurott falls flat. It functions primarily as a Swords Dance setup sweeper or a mixed wallbreaker. However, its base 70 Speed leaves it outpaced by most offensive threats in the metagame.
Unovan
Samurott suffers from massive outclassing.
Crawdaunt hits significantly harder thanks to Adaptability, and
Azumarill offers better typing and raw damage with Huge Power.
- Pros: Access to Swords Dance, Megahorn for Grass-types, and Aqua Jet for priority.
- Cons: Pure Water typing provides zero secondary STAB. Base 70 Speed requires heavy support like Sticky Web to function.
- Best for: Lower-tier draft leagues where top-tier Water types are already drafted or banned.
Competitive Verdict: Hisuian Samurott (Rating: 8.5/10)
Hisuian
Samurott completely revived the evolutionary line's competitive viability. It serves as a premier Suicide Lead and Hazard Setter in OverUsed (OU) and UnderUsed (UU) formats. The Sharpness ability boosts slicing moves by 50%, turning Ceaseless Edge into a devastating tool.
Ceaseless Edge deals Dark-type STAB damage and guarantees a layer of Spikes on the opponent's side of the field. Because the Spikes are set as a secondary effect of an attack, this move bypasses Taunt and Magic Bounce entirely.
- Pros: Base 85 Speed outpaces defensive leads. Sharpness-boosted Razor Shell and Sacred Sword provide excellent coverage.
- Cons: Base 90/80/65 bulk makes it frail against strong neutral hits. Highly vulnerable to faster U-turn pivots like
Meowscarada. - Best for: Hyper-offense teams needing reliable entry hazards and early-game pressure.
Optimal Preparation Pre-Evolution
Before evolving
Dewott, check its moveset and held items to align with your intended final form. Unovan
Samurott relies heavily on Aqua Jet, which
Dewott learns at level 21. Ensure this priority move is locked in before the level 36 transition.
If you are building a Hisuian
Samurott, prioritize physical attacks. Hisuian
Samurott's base 108 Attack overshadows its base 100 Special Attack.
Do not invest in Special Attack EVs on
Dewott if Hisui is your destination. Instead, max out Attack and Speed EVs (252 Atk / 252 Spe) while it is still a
Dewott to streamline your competitive build post-evolution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dewott's Evolution
Can I evolve Dewott into Hisuian Samurott in Scarlet and Violet?
No. You must transfer Dewott to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, level it up to 36 there to trigger the Hisuian evolution, and then transfer it back to Scarlet and Violet via Pokémon HOME.
Does Dewott need a Water Stone to evolve?
Dewott does not require any evolution stones. It evolves purely by reaching level 36 through battle experience, EXP Candies, or Rare Candies.
What level does Oshawott evolve into Dewott?
Oshawott evolves into Dewott at level 17. The entire evolutionary line relies strictly on leveling up, with no friendship or trading mechanics involved.
Is Eviolite Dewott viable in competitive play?
Eviolite boosts Dewott's Defense and Special Defense by 50%, but its base 75 HP and lack of reliable recovery make it a poor defensive wall compared to alternatives like Toxapex or Alomomola.
