Leveling Magnemite to Magneton
Magnemite requires exactly 100,000 EXP to reach level 30, triggering its first evolution into
Magneton. This stage relies entirely on standard leveling, requiring no items or specific locations.
Players can cancel the evolution by pressing the B button during the animation. However, delaying the evolution offers no tangible benefit, as
Magneton learns the exact same moves as
Magnemite, albeit at slightly higher levels.
Evolving grants an immediate +140 jump in Base Stat Total (from 325 to 465). This massive boost heavily favors Special Attack and Defense, making
Magneton a viable mid-game Electric/Steel asset.
Evolving Magneton into Magnezone: Generation Differences
The method to reach
Magnezone depends entirely on which generation you are playing. Modern titles simplified the process, while older games rely on location-based mechanics.
In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Legends:
Arceus, and Scarlet and Violet, you evolve
Magneton into
Magnezone using a Thunder Stone. Apply the item directly from your bag; no leveling is required.
For games from Generation 4 through 7,
Magneton must level up in a specific "special magnetic field" location. Using a Rare Candy in these zones also triggers the evolution.
Key magnetic field locations include:
- Sinnoh (Gen 4 & BDSP): Mt. Coronet
- Unova (Gen 5): Chargestone Cave
- Kalos (Gen 6): Route 13 (Lumiose Badlands)
- Hoenn (ORAS): New Mauville
- Alola (Gen 7): Vast Poni Canyon or Blush Mountain
Special Cases: HeartGold, SoulSilver, and Let's Go
Certain remakes lack a special magnetic field entirely, complicating the evolution process for
Magnezone. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver feature no magnetic zones in Johto or Kanto.
To evolve
Magneton in HGSS, you must trade it to Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, level it up inside Mt. Coronet, and trade it back. The same restriction applies to Pokémon Let's Go,
Pikachu! and Let's Go,
Eevee!, where
Magnezone is completely unobtainable because held items and cross-generation evolutions are disabled.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl offer dual methods. Players can level up
Magneton in Mt. Coronet as in the original Gen 4 titles, or simply use a Thunder Stone to bypass the location requirement.
Competitive Verdict: 8.5/10 Trapper
Magnezone holds a strict 8.5/10 rating in competitive play due to a single ability: Magnet Pull. This ability traps opposing Steel-types, preventing them from switching out.
Its primary role is a specialized Wallbreaker or offensive Pivot. Teams run
Magnezone specifically to eliminate defensive staples like
Skarmory,
Corviknight,
Scizor, and
Ferrothorn.
Equipped with Choice Specs,
Magnezone easily OHKOs trapped targets with Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Fire (in older generations). Alternatively, an Air Balloon grants temporary Ground immunity, allowing it to trap
Excadrill locked into Earthquake.
Do not run
Magnezone if your team already handles Steel-types effectively. It suffers from a low base 60 Speed, leaving it vulnerable to common Ground and Fighting-type sweepers once its trapping job is done.
Pros, Cons, and Team Synergy
Magnezone excels on hyper-offense and bulky offense teams that rely on Dragon or Flying-type sweepers. Sweepers like
Dragonite or
Salamence appreciate the removal of Steel-type walls that resist their STAB moves.
Pros:
- Guaranteed removal of specific defensive threats via Magnet Pull.
- Massive 130 base Special Attack forces heavy damage.
- 12 type resistances and 1 immunity provide excellent switch-in opportunities.
Cons:
- 4x weakness to Ground-type attacks makes it easy prey for
Garchomp or Landorus-Therian. - Base 60 Speed requires pivot support (Volt Switch/U-turn) to get onto the field safely.
- Predictable movepool makes it easy to counter once the opponent identifies the Choice item.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you evolve Magnemite with a Thunder Stone?
No. The Thunder Stone only works on Magneton to evolve it into Magnezone in Generation 8 and later. Magnemite must reach level 30 naturally.
Why won't my Magneton evolve in HeartGold?
HeartGold and SoulSilver do not contain a special magnetic field. You must trade Magneton to a Sinnoh game, level it up in Mt. Coronet, and trade it back.
Does Magnezone learn different moves than Magneton?
Magnezone learns Tri Attack upon evolving, but otherwise shares the same level-up moveset as Magneton. Evolving immediately is optimal to gain the base stat boost.
Is Magnet Pull better than Sturdy?
Yes. Magnet Pull defines Magnezone's entire competitive niche as a Steel-trapper. Sturdy is only useful for specific setup sets or in standard single-player playthroughs.
