Evolving Pawmo
The Essentials
Evolving Pawmo relies entirely on the overworld partner mechanics rather than traditional level thresholds or evolution stones.
- Target:
Pawmot - Method: Walk 1,000 steps together, then level up
- Required Items: None (Rare Candy or EXP Candy recommended for the final level)
While
Pawmot boasts a unique Electric/Fighting typing and the revival move Revival Blessing, its low bulk makes it a liability in competitive play. Keep it in your party for the main story, but swap it out for ranked matches.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Method
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, navigating the urban environment of Lumiose City changes how partner tracking works. You still need to accumulate 1,000 steps with your partner out.
- Assign Pawmo as your active partner Pokémon.
- Release it into the Lumiose City overworld.
- Walk or lightly jog through the city streets until you hit the 1,000-step mark.
- Level up
Pawmo using a Rare Candy or through a standard battle within the city limits.
Keep your pace moderate. Sprinting too far ahead will force
Pawmo to teleport back to you, which pauses the step tracking.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Method
The Paldea region uses the Let's Go feature for this evolution. The lack of an in-game step counter means you must estimate your distance.
- Put Pawmo in the first slot of your party.
- Press R or ZR to send it out into the field.
- Walk around a safe area like Los Platos or the academy courtyard for about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Open your bag and feed
Pawmo an EXP Candy to level it up.
You can ride
Koraidon or
Miraidon, but you must move at a walking pace. If you dash,
Pawmo will despawn into its Poké Ball and stop accumulating steps.
Pokémon GO Method
The mobile game adapts the walking requirement into its Buddy system. This requires significantly more physical movement than the mainline games.
- Set Pawmo as your active Buddy Pokémon.
- Walk exactly 25 kilometers with the app open or Adventure Sync enabled.
- Collect 100
Pawmi Candy. - Tap the evolve button on
Pawmo's summary screen.
Track your progress directly on the Buddy screen. You do not need to feed it berries to have it visible on the map for the distance to count.
Troubleshooting: Why Isn't Pawmo Evolving?
Players frequently hit roadblocks with this specific evolution method. The most common issue is how the level-up is handled.
- Auto-battle soft lock: Pokémon cannot evolve from experience gained via the Let's Go auto-battle feature. You must initiate a traditional turn-based battle or use an item.
- Step counter resets: The 1,000 steps do not need to be consecutive. However, if
Pawmo faints, the counter may lose recent progress. Keep it out of combat while walking. - Despawning: If you run too fast,
Pawmo returns to its ball. Check behind you frequently to ensure it is actually walking on the ground.
If you are certain you walked enough, simply use a Rare Candy. If the evolution does not trigger, walk for another two minutes and try again.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when Pawmo has walked 1,000 steps?
There is no in-game step counter in the mainline games. A reliable trick is to walk in circles in a safe town for about 5 to 7 minutes. If you use a Candy and it does not evolve, you have not reached the threshold yet.
Can I ride my mount while walking Pawmo?
Yes, but you must move at a slow walking pace. If you use the dash feature on Koraidon or Miraidon, you will outrun Pawmo. It will automatically return to its Poké Ball, halting your step progress.
Why didn't Pawmo evolve after leveling up?
If you leveled up using the Let's Go auto-battle feature, the evolution screen will not trigger. Evolutions are disabled during auto-battles. You must level up via a standard turn-based battle or by using an EXP Candy.
Do the 1,000 steps have to be done all at once?
No, the steps are cumulative. You can walk 500 steps, return Pawmo to its ball, and walk the remaining 500 later. Just ensure it is outside its ball when you are actively trying to add to the counter.
