How to Evolve Primeape

To evolve Primeape, you must use the move ragefist 20 times in battle, then level it up once. It learns this required attack at level 35. This core mechanic applies across modern mainline games including Scarlet, Violet, and Legends: Z-A.

Evolving Primeape centers entirely on mastering its signature attack. This process requires patience but unlocks significant power.

However, evolving it is almost always optimal unless you specifically need a faster, frailer pivot using uturn.

The evolution mechanic remains identical across the Generation 9 engine and the newer Legends: Z-A environment. You do not need any specific evolution stone.

1. Train Primeape to level 35 so it learns ragefist.
2. Enter battles and select the move exactly 20 times.
3. Visit a Pokémon Center to restore PP if you run out, as the move only has 10 PP by default.
4. Level up Primeape once through battle experience or candies after the 20th use.

A highly effective strategy involves fighting Normal-type opponents. Even though Ghost-type moves fail against them, the game still counts the attack execution toward your 20 required uses.

Using taunt on wild enemies prevents them from inflicting status conditions while you grind the required move uses. Pairing Primeape with defensive partners like Sandslash or Magneton allows you to safely pivot out if your HP gets too low during the process.
