How to Evolve Voltorb

Evolving Voltorb depends entirely on its regional form. The standard Kantonian variant evolves into Electrode simply by reaching level 30. There are no trading requirements, friendship thresholds, or specific times of day needed for this process. Once the level is reached, the evolution triggers automatically.

Hisuian Voltorb operates under completely different mechanics. It does not evolve by leveling up. Instead, you must use a Leaf Stone on it to trigger the evolution into Hisuian Electrode. Because this relies on an evolution stone, you can evolve a Hisuian Voltorb at level 1 if you have the item in your inventory.

Players transferring Hisuian Voltorb into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet via Pokémon HOME retain this mechanic. The game engine reads the Hisuian internal flag and strictly requires the Leaf Stone, ignoring the traditional level 30 threshold entirely.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, finding a Leaf Stone requires engaging with specific gathering mechanics. You can purchase one directly from the Trading Post in Jubilife Village for 1,000 Merit Points. Alternatively, Ursaluna can dig them up during treasure hunts in the Crimson Mirelands.

Space-Time Distortions also frequently drop Leaf Stones on the ground. If you are evolving Hisuian Voltorb in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the process is much faster. Leaf Stones are available for purchase at any Delibird Presents location for 3,000 Pokédollars after earning three Gym Badges.

Kantonian Electrode is defined entirely by its base 150 Speed stat. It outspeeds nearly the entire unboosted metagame, including Dragapult and Zeraora. However, its base 80 Special Attack is pitiful by modern competitive standards, making it a terrible choice for a dedicated special sweeper.

Its optimal role is a suicide lead and fast pivot. Equipped with Light Clay, Electrode can guarantee setting up Reflect or Light Screen before taking a hit. Access to Taunt shuts down opposing hazard setters like Toxapex or Ferrothorn.

Once screens are up, Electrode uses Volt Switch to deal chip damage and safely bring in a setup sweeper. Alternatively, Foul Play punishes physical attackers attempting to set up Swords Dance. Despite these utility options, its terrible 60/70/80 bulk means it rarely survives more than one neutral hit, restricting it to lower tiers like PU or NU.

Hisuian Electrode gains the Grass typing, transforming it into an Electric/Grass dual-type. This provides STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) on Grass moves, most notably its signature attack, Chloroblast. Chloroblast deals massive 150 base power damage but inflicts 50% recoil to the user, cementing Hisuian Electrode's role as a hit-and-run attacker.

While it shares the same base 150 Speed and underwhelming 80 Special Attack as its Kantonian counterpart, the Grass typing offers key resistances to Ground, Water, and Electric attacks. A Choice Specs set maximizes its damage output, allowing Volt Switch and Leaf Storm to actually threaten bulky Water-types like Slowbro or Dondozo.

Another viable strategy involves running a SubSeed set (Substitute and Leech Seed). Because it outspeeds almost everything, Hisuian Electrode can plant a Leech Seed and hide behind a Substitute before the opponent reacts. However, a severe weakness to Ice, Fire, Poison, and Bug keeps it out of standard OU play.

In Pokémon GO, the evolution process ignores main-series mechanics like the Leaf Stone. Both Kantonian and Hisuian Voltorb require exactly 50 Voltorb Candy to evolve. There are no walking requirements or specific Lure Modules needed to initiate the evolution.

Because both forms share the same candy pool, catching Kantonian variants will fuel the evolution of a Hisuian variant. Pinap Berries are highly recommended during Spotlight Hours to quickly amass the 50 candies required.

For Great League PvP, Hisuian Electrode sees fringe play due to its spammy moveset consisting of Thunder Shock and Energy Ball. Kantonian Electrode is generally outclassed by bulkier Electric-types like Lanturn or Galvantula in the GO Battle League.
