Fearow (In-Game & PvP)
No for competitive PvP, but situationally useful for early-game playthroughs.
Fearow lacks the stats and movepool to survive modern competitive formats and is completely absent from Scarlet and Violet ranked ladders. In story modes, its high Speed and early access to Drill Peck make it a decent early-to-mid-game physical attacker before better options become available.
Verdict
Fearow is an outclassed early-game bird that you should permanently box as soon as you catch a
Dodrio or
Staraptor.
Rating 3/10 · Tier Untiered (PvP) / C-(Playthrough) · Role : Early-Game Physical Attacker / Glass Cannon

Weaknesses
- Abysmal defensive stats make it a massive liability mid-to-late game.

Tier & Role: The Reality Check
Fearow sits firmly at the bottom of the barrel in any serious competitive context. Absent from the Scarlet and Violet ranked ladders, it is traditionally relegated to the lowest untiered brackets in Smogon formats.
Its role is entirely one-dimensional: a fast, frail physical attacker. You bring
Fearow in to hit something quickly, and you expect it to faint shortly after.
In a story playthrough,
Fearow serves as an early-game sweeper. Its high Speed stat allows it to act first against most unevolved NPC Pokémon, while its decent Attack stat is sufficient to punch holes through early Gyms.
However, this utility has a strict expiration date. Once enemy trainers start fielding fully evolved Pokémon with actual bulk,
Fearow's damage output falls off a cliff, and its inability to take a hit becomes glaringly obvious.
Best Playthrough Moveset & Strategy
If you are committed to using
Fearow in a classic playthrough or a ROM hack, you must optimize its limited tools. The Sniper ability is generally preferred over Keen Eye, as it turns critical hits into devastating blows.
The Standard Story Sweeper Set
- Item: Sharp Beak or Choice Band (if available)
- Ability: Sniper
- Moves: Drill Peck / Drill Run / Return (or Double-Edge) / U-turn
Drill Peck is
Fearow's bread and butter. Unlike Brave Bird, it has no recoil, which is crucial for a Pokémon that already struggles to survive. You get access to it relatively early, which is
Fearow's main advantage over other regional birds.
Drill Run is mandatory. It provides super-effective coverage against the Rock and Electric types that resist Flying. Return offers a high-base-power Normal STAB once your friendship is maxed out.
Finally, U-turn allows
Fearow to act as a pivot. If you face a bad matchup,
Fearow's high Speed lets it U-turn out before taking damage, bringing in a bulkier teammate safely.
Matchups It Wins (Early Game)
Fearow shines brightest during the first half of a Pokémon game. It completely dominates early Bug, Grass, and Fighting-type trainers.
Against Grass-types,
Fearow's Speed ensures it bypasses annoying status powders (Sleep Powder, Stun Spore) by simply OHKOing the threat with Drill Peck.
Fighting-types, which often have high physical Attack but lower Speed, are easy prey.
Fearow outpaces threats like
Machop or
Mankey and eliminates them before they can retaliate.
It also performs surprisingly well against early Poison-types. Since many early Poison Pokémon (like the
Zubat or
Oddish lines) are frail,
Fearow can brute-force its way through them with neutral STAB Return or super-effective Drill Peck.
Fatal Weaknesses (Honest Flaws)
Fearow's biggest flaw is its atrocious bulk. It is a textbook glass cannon, but without the "cannon" part in the late game. Any neutral physical or special attack from a fully evolved Pokémon will easily strip away 70% to 100% of its HP.
Rock, Electric, and Ice-type moves are everywhere, and
Fearow cannot survive any of them. Even with Drill Run, if
Fearow fails to OHKO an opposing Rock-type like
Golem or an Electric-type like
Raichu, it will be knocked out in return.
Intimidate users completely shut
Fearow down. Since its base Attack is only mediocre by late-game standards, a single Attack drop renders it entirely useless, turning its Drill Pecks into mere scratches.
Furthermore, in any format where Stealth Rock exists,
Fearow loses 25% of its health just by entering the field. Combined with its lack of reliable recovery (Roost is often a wasted turn due to its frailty),
Fearow's longevity is practically zero.
Teammates & Synergies
To make
Fearow work, you need teammates that cover its glaring weaknesses. Ground-type Pokémon are mandatory partners. They provide a vital immunity to Electric-type attacks aimed at
Fearow.
- Ground-types (e.g.,
Nidoking,
Krookodile): They absorb Electric moves and can handle the Rock and Steel types that wall
Fearow. - Bulky Water-types (e.g.,
Vaporeon,
Lapras): They easily soak up Ice-type attacks and can threaten opposing Rock/Ground types with super-effective STAB. - VoltTurn Cores: Pairing
Fearow's U-turn with a slow Volt Switch user allows you to safely pivot
Fearow onto the field without it taking damage.
You also need a dedicated physical wall.
Fearow cannot switch into physical attacks, so having a Pokémon like
Steelix or
Corviknight to absorb hits is essential to keep
Fearow alive for late-game cleanup.
Avoid If... & Best Alternatives
Do not use
Fearow if you are playing any form of competitive PvP, including draft leagues. It is simply too weak. Furthermore, avoid
Fearow in playthroughs once you reach the 6th or 7th Gym, as the NPC level scaling will expose its terrible base stats.
If you need a fast Normal/Flying type,
Dodrio is the objective upgrade.
Dodrio boasts higher Attack, higher Speed, and hits significantly harder.
Better Alternatives
Staraptor: Offers Intimidate or Reckless, hits like a truck with Close Combat and Brave Bird, and has a vastly superior movepool.
Crobat: Much faster, better defensive typing (Poison/Flying), and offers incredible utility with Taunt, Roost, and Toxic.
Corviknight: If playing modern generations,
Corviknight provides actual bulk, a phenomenal Steel/Flying typing, and reliable recovery.
Future Prospects: Pokémon Legends Z-A
Looking ahead to Pokémon Legends: Z-A (2025),
Fearow's only hope for viability lies in new mechanics. Since it missed out on Scarlet and Violet's Terastallization, it currently relies on outdated tools.
If
Fearow appears in Legends: Z-A, it desperately needs a Mega Evolution or a regional variant to fix its stat distribution. A Mega Evolution that boosts its Attack and Speed to modern standards, perhaps granting it a new ability like Aerilate or Tough Claws, would be the only way to drag it out of the D-tier.
Without a significant mechanical overhaul,
Fearow will remain a nostalgic but ultimately useless relic of the Kanto era, destined to be boxed the moment a better bird is caught.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fearow
Is Fearow better than Pidgeot?
In early generations and standard story mode, Fearow is slightly better due to higher Attack, better Speed, and early access to Drill Peck. However, Pidgeot's Mega Evolution in Gen 6 made Pidgeot vastly superior in any format where Megas are allowed.
Is Fearow better than Dodrio?
Absolutely not. Dodrio is a direct upgrade over Fearow. Dodrio has a significantly higher base Attack and Speed, making it a much more effective physical sweeper. If you have the choice, always pick Dodrio over Fearow.
What is the best moveset for Fearow?
The most effective moveset for Fearow is Drill Peck, Drill Run, Return (or Double-Edge), and U-turn. Equip it with a Choice Band or Sharp Beak. This maximizes its coverage against Rock and Electric types while providing a pivoting option.
Can Fearow be used in competitive PvP?
No. Fearow is considered unviable in serious competitive PvP. Its base stats are too low to compete with modern threats, its defenses are paper-thin, and it lacks the utility moves required to function in higher tiers.
