How to Evolve Porygon

Porygon, the Virtual Pokémon, is unique in that it was created by humans using advanced technology. Its evolution process reflects this artificial origin, requiring special, man-made items instead of simple leveling. The first step is to evolve it into Porygon2.

To do this, you need two things: a special item called the Up-Grade and a friend to trade with. First, give the Up-Grade to your Porygon to hold. Then, initiate a trade with another player. Once the trade is complete, your Porygon will evolve into Porygon2 on your friend's screen. They will then need to trade it back to you.

The Up-Grade can be found in various locations depending on the game. For example, it's a prize at the Celadon Game Corner in some titles, a gift from Professor Oak's aide, or can be crafted using the Cram-o-matic in Pokémon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor DLC.

Once you have Porygon2, you can take its evolution one step further to obtain the powerful but erratic Porygon-Z. This final evolution was the result of a further software patch intended to improve Porygon2, but it ended up making its behavior unstable.

The process is very similar to the first evolution. You'll need another specific held item, the Dubious Disc, and another trade. Have your Porygon2 hold the Dubious Disc, and trade it with a friend. The trade will trigger the evolution into Porygon-Z, its final form. Remember to have your friend trade it back!

The Dubious Disc is often found in late-game areas. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, you can find one on Route 225. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, it can be purchased at the Porto Marinada auction or obtained as a reward for completing the Kitakami Pokédex in The Teal Mask DLC.
